TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (TBI): GET THE FACTS

Approximately 1.5 million Americans per year sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and of those, 50,000 will die. Those who survive a TBI can face effects that last a few days – or the rest of their lives.

WHAT IS BRAIN TRAUMA?

Brain trauma describes any injury to the brain caused by an impact or jolt to the head. The medical term for this is Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI. When your head shakes violently or an object impacts it, the brain can move within your skull and suffer significant damage. Although they’re less common, brain trauma can also describe injuries where the skull is broken or pierced, like a bullet wound.

Medical experts categorize traumatic brain injuries as mild, moderate, or severe, and they have accompanying symptoms that follow that same severity scale. You may have a traumatic brain injury and never know it if all you feel is some dizziness and a headache. On the other hand, a car crash or sports injury could result in symptoms as severe as coma and brain death.

Many people who have TBIs can move on with their lives quickly after they are assessed by a medical practitioner. Some TBI sufferers, however, may have worsening or new symptoms in the days or weeks after their injury. Persistent numbness, headache, or dizziness, in addition to new complications like seizures, may require additional treatment.

The mental and psychological effects of TBIs are less discussed but as significant as the physical ones. Traumatic Brain Injury can cause personality or mood disorders and changes in behavior in adults. Children may experience educational setbacks or limitations that require lifelong intervention. A qualified traumatic brain injury lawyer can assess whether you may be owed damages for the persistent effects of your injury from the person or business that caused it.

TYPES OF BRAIN INJURIES

A traumatic brain injury can temporarily or permanently disrupt brain function, leading to a significantly lower quality of life for victims. The term TBI encompasses injuries that affect only one portion of the brain or the entire brain. Many TBI survivors have open head wounds or shattered areas of the skull, while others only experience internal damage. TBIs can result in a temporary loss of consciousness or long-term comas.

CONCUSSIONS

Mild brain injuries are called concussions. These are the most common types of brain traumas, accounting for around three-fourths of TBIs in Alabama. A concussion can occur anytime a person receives a hard hit to the head or collides with a hard surface. While some individuals lose consciousness after a concussion, some will remain awake and may not even realize they have a brain injury. Common symptoms of a concussion include slurred speech, mental confusion, blurred vision, and vomiting. A medical professional can diagnose whether the concussion is mild, moderate, or severe.

CONTUSIONS

When the head is violently shaken, it can cause the brain to knock against the inside of the skull, leading to brain bruising. These types of brain injuries are known as cerebral contusions. They may result in internal bleeding in the head caused by the impact of the accident. Contusions sometimes start small and then slowly expand, putting pressure on the brain tissue and affecting brain function. If the contusion is large enough, the patient may need to receive an operation.

PENETRATING HEAD TRAUMAS

Penetrating head traumas happen when the skull is pierced by a knife, bullet, tool, nail, or other blunt force. The leading cause of penetrating head injuries is, predictably, gunshot wounds.

COUP-CONTRECOUP INJURIES

With some brain traumas, the impact of the accident can cause the brain to bounce from one side of the skull to the other, leading to bruising on both sides of the brain. These types of injuries are classed as coup-contrecoup traumas.

DIFFUSE AXONAL INJURIES

A diffuse axonal injury occurs when the nerve fibers throughout the brain become damaged. Violent acceleration and deceleration of the head can tear the nerve fibers (axons). These brain components are responsible for conveying important messages that bolster communication abilities. Diffuse axonal injuries are common with shaken baby syndrome, car collisions, and slip-and-falls. If the victim of a diffuse axonal injury remains unconscious for longer than about six hours, they may acquire severe brain damage.
