Cystic fibrosis is a chronic genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce thick, sticky mucus. This mucus can clog the lungs, leading to life- threatening lung infections, and obstruct the pancreas, stopping natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. It is a recessive genetic disease, only occurring when a child inherits two mutated copies of the CF gene, one from each parent.
