Dozens of lawsuits have been filed by women diagnosed with meningioma, a type of brain tumor, following their use of the popular injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera. The plaintiffs allege that Pfizer, the drug's manufacturer, failed to adequately warn patients and healthcare providers about the increased risk of meningioma associated with Depo-Provera use.
On Friday, February 7, 2025, the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated these cases into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of Florida. This jurisdiction was selected due to the presence of related pending actions and its capacity to efficiently manage complex, nationwide litigation. The Honorable M. Casey Rodgers has been assigned to preside over the MDL. Judge Rodgers brings extensive experience to this role, notably having overseen the 3M Earplugs MDL, one of the largest mass tort litigations in history with approximately 250,000 claimants, which resulted in a $6 billion settlement. Her expertise in complex product liability litigation is expected to ensure the prudent and expeditious progression of this matter.
