Drew Haskins recently settled a breach of contract case in the amount of $380,000 after his clients lost all of their personal belongings in an apartment fire. The evidence in the case confirmed that the maintenance group for the apartment complex was aware of faulty wiring issues in the unit where the fire began, which included prior complaints of a sparking electrical outlet. Despite this knowledge, the maintenance group never further inspected and/or repaired the wiring in the unit, which eventually resulted in the fire. The clients’ recovery was based on the apartment complex’s failure to maintain the unit in a condition suitable for human residence, in accordance with the tenants’ lease contract.
