HGD Partner Steve Heninger was a guest speaker at the annual Bright Ideas Traumatic Brain Injury TBI) Camp with the Alabama Head Injury Foundation (AHiF). Interprofessional teams of students in Samford University’s School of Health Professions, Ida Moffett School of Nursing and School of Public Health work side by side to evaluate and treat survivors of traumatic brain injury and support their families at the annual camp. Steve Heninger was on hand to educate the attendees about their legal options when dealing with a TBI.
Shockingly, nearly 2.8 million people suffer traumatic brain injuries every year in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), traumatic brain injuries contribute to the deaths of 56,800 people every year, including over 23,000 deaths of children. Additionally, emergency room visits of children age 17 and younger for traumatic brain injuries increased by 54% between 2006 and 2014. In addition to medical care, a survivor of these injuries often needs a combination of physical and neurological rehabilitation, as well as psychological counseling in order to deal with the many impairments that go hand-in-hand with a devastating injury.
The Alabama Head Injury Foundation (AHIF) was founded by professionals and families in 1983 to increase public awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and to stimulate the development of supportive services. Whether the injury is mild or severe the life of the injured person and their family is changed forever. The impact can be both emotionally and financially devastating. AHIF provides the information to help clients and families understand the results of injury. AHIF helps access available resources and provides services and programs which meet the unique needs of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) as well as spinal cord injury (SCI) in certain programs.
HGD is a proud community partner with the AHiF. Additionally, Erik Heninger is on the Birmingham Regional board for AHiF and Brandy Robertson is on the Board of Directors.
